Parent Vision Trip

July 22, 2015 by Liz Olson 1 Comment

The Parent Vision Trip is an opportunity for parents to join their racers on the field and partner with a ministry for a week. J-Squad’s PVT experience took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We were blessed to be able to partner with Lighthouse In Action, a kingdom-focused ministry that strives to love on ALL people mixed-up in the mess of the sex-trafficking industry along with many other services and acts of love. Here is a snip-bit of the Scott Fam Bam PVT experience!

Peg and I had the wonderful opportunity to team with my daughter and other Racers in Thailand.  From the very first meeting of fellow parents and racers, I felt the presence of a higher power.  These young adults are amazing in spirit and intellect. They have learned to love each other like I have never witnessed. It was great getting to know many of the face-book picture/world race bloggers. I think I am more able to understand the pure difficulty Ellen will have leaving these brothers and sisters in Christ. Brothers and sisters she has lived with for the last 8 months.  I have never been hugged with so much intensity ever. God this is an amazing group.

Yep, I left with more than I brought to Thailand. I got to ride an elephant, spent time in truly moving worship, ate some great food, loved on some folks that needed loving on, got loved on by some folks that are really good at loving others.  Can you believe it, Mom and I got to baptize our own daughter… I can’t put into words what it means to know your daughter has become your sister!  I think many of us parents found out that yes we are parents of these adult children, but even more beautiful is the fact that we are brothers and sisters in Christ -awesome!!!

Brothers and sisters in Christ- that’s what Thailand was about!

Remember when you could beat your kids at anything–you may have let them win a race, a game of checkers, crazy 8‘s or Connect 4. You taught them how to win, how to lose. We spent time teaching them to pound a nail, cook a pancake, tie their shoes, etc.   When did it flip – when did we as parents started learning so much from our kids (young adults)?  Reflecting on and missing our daughter Ellen, has reminded me so much of her childhood. We thought we were the teachers. But during the trip I realized, we have learned and are learning so much from our children.

Returning from the PVT (Parent Vision Trip), we were asked by many people from our church, our friends and community.  What was your favorite part of the trip?

My answer is, not the elephant ride or the fish eating pedicure or even the way our daughter and racers loved on the bar girls. It is the God inspired, meaningful worship and prayers that theylead each day of the trip. To be so moved by the very children that we have been given the temporary charge of.  I continue to reflect daily on their enlightened stories, their maturity, especially their spiritual maturity. How did they grow up to be the adults they have become?  Simple answer-God chose them before they were born. He has known them always. Thanks God for lending them to us! Thank you God for letting us be part of this plan! Mom

Ellen (that’s me)
Around this time last year, my parents were in Waverly, IA for my college graduation doing what they do best, supporting their children. A couple weeks ago, they were boarding a plane in Thailand to return home after spending a week supporting me, yet again.
All of my squad mates know how much I love my parents. I have a habit of breaking off on a story-telling tangent that often included my family members. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out my parents would be jumping on a plane and coming to Thailand to serve along-side me. What I didn’t realize is that these two worlds of mine would collide.
You see, I am not the same person I was back in September. And neither are my parents. It took them coming and bravely meeting my new J squad family for us to truly feel the change in our hearts. Oddly enough, a part of me felt as if I was being re-introduced to the people who have known me best since day one.
This squad of people has become my family. They know my weaknesses and strengths better than I do. My parents know my thoughts before I can form a sentence. So you can see the power in my entire “family” finally being together? Not only being together, but worshiping our Heavenly Father? It was a dream come true. A dream I didn’t really know I had.
Not to mention the fact that my parents baptized me with my J squad family as witnesses? Come on! Can I get an AMEN. As my squad mate would say, “Dust that and all you’ll see is Jesus’ fingerprints!” Couldn’t say it better myself.
Endless praise to my Heavenly Father who orchestrated this all. You give the BEST gifts to your beloved children.
